“Vancouver Park Board Apologizes to 2SLGBTQ+ Community”

Date:

Vancouver’s park board has recently approved a motion to apologize to the 2SLGBTQ+ community for the controversy surrounding the hosting of the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience in Stanley Park in November. The decision garnered a response from author J.K. Rowling after Commissioner Tom Digby commended the board’s actions in a public post, highlighting the disavowal of the author and her stance on transgender rights.

Rowling expressed her surprise at being “disavowed” by Vancouver Parks and Recreation, stating that she was unaware of their previous endorsement. The discussions arose following a meeting where commissioners deliberated on their decision to bring the immersive Harry Potter experience to Stanley Park without full awareness of Rowling’s contentious views.

Rob Hadley, a member of Vancouver’s 2SLGBTQ+ Advisory Committee, addressed the board, expressing concerns that Rowling’s beliefs and actions pose a threat to transgender rights. He emphasized the importance of not providing a platform for individuals who promote negative messages about the transgender community.

The decision to feature Rowling’s work in a publicly funded event was criticized for potentially undermining the concerns and experiences of transgender residents in the city. The advisory committee clarified that the aim was not to boycott the Harry Potter series but to raise awareness about the implications of financially supporting the author.

Representatives from Qmunity, a prominent organization serving 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in British Columbia, voiced disappointment over the installation decision, stating that it contradicted Vancouver’s values of inclusion and respect for all communities. The board acknowledged the misstep and pledged to take steps to address the issue.

Commissioner Angela Haer expressed regret over the situation, and Digby’s motion, titled “Affirming the Park Board’s Commitment to Transgender Lives and Rights,” reaffirms support for TGD2S people and denounces Rowling’s political activities. It also ensures that the installation will only be in place for the current season.
