Israeli Airstrikes Kill 26 in Gaza Amid Ceasefire Tensions

Date:

Israeli airstrikes targeted Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 individuals. The strikes were in response to Israel accusing Hamas of breaching a ceasefire in the region, a deal brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump. Among the casualties were individuals in various locations, including a house in the Bureij refugee camp and a building in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood. Witnesses reported ongoing Israeli airstrikes across Gaza, including in Gaza City.

Israeli military officials alleged that Hamas violated the ceasefire by attacking Israeli forces in an area under Israeli control. The Israeli government informed the United States before initiating the strikes. While Israel reported clashes between its forces and Hamas fighters in Rafah, Hamas denied responsibility for the attack. Both sides have accused each other of ceasefire violations.

The ceasefire agreement entailed Hamas releasing living hostages in exchange for Palestinian convicts, with Israel withdrawing troops and halting its offensive. Hamas agreed to hand over the remains of deceased hostages, but challenges persist in locating and retrieving the bodies due to destruction in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of manipulating the remains’ transfer process, claiming Hamas planted remains to fabricate efforts to find missing hostages.

Efforts to search for the missing hostages intensified with the arrival of heavy machinery from Egypt. Bulldozers were deployed in Khan Younis and Nuseirat, with Hamas fighters assisting in search operations. Rescuers are combing through rubble to locate the remains of Palestinians still unaccounted for after years of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the dismantling of Hamas tunnels would continue, with a significant percentage still intact.

The conflict has resulted in a significant death toll and numerous missing persons in Gaza. Israel’s military actions continue in areas where forces are still present. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the fragile ceasefire terms.
