The iconic Carnegie Library in Winnipeg, adorned with the inscription “Free to All,” has been inaccessible for over a decade, despite its historical significance. As the building celebrates its 120th anniversary, plans are underway for a major transformation.
Executive Director of Heritage Winnipeg, Cindy Tugwell, expressed optimism about the upcoming $22.8 million renovation project that aims to convert the 37,350-square-foot library into a cutting-edge archives facility. The revitalization will include the installation of a climate-controlled vault to safeguard and showcase Winnipeg’s rich historical records.
Anticipated to commence construction later this year, the refurbished library is scheduled to reopen its doors in 2027. Tugwell emphasized the importance of preserving history, stating that the initiative reflects the city’s commitment to honoring its heritage and educating future generations.
The journey of the Carnegie Library dates back to 1901 when provincial librarian John P. Robertson secured funding from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to establish Manitoba’s inaugural public library building. Over time, the library evolved into a vital community resource, housing a vast collection of books and documents.
Despite facing challenges such as closures and relocation, the library has remained a symbol of knowledge and heritage in Winnipeg. The impending renovation signifies a new chapter for the historic landmark, promising enhanced accessibility and preservation of invaluable archival materials for years to come.
