“Injured Co-Captain Reda Out, Canada Eyes FIFA U-17 World Cup Success”

Date:

Canada’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign faces a setback as co-captain Emma Reda sustains an injury during training. The 16-year-old midfielder from Woodbridge, Ont., daughter of former Canadian international Marco Reda, fractured her ulna in a slide tackle attempt to regain possession, according to coach Jen Herst. In response, Ottawa midfielder Felicia Hanisch has been called up as a replacement for the injured Reda, joining co-captains Chloe Taylor and Olivia Chisholm in Morocco.

The Canadian team anticipates a challenging match against Nigeria in their opening game on Sunday. Herst expects a tough, fast-paced encounter from the African side, known for their explosive playing style and long-range shooting abilities, led by striker Shakirat Moshood. Following Nigeria, Canada will face Samoa and France in Group D matches at the Football Academy Mohammed VI in Sale.

Coach Herst expresses confidence in Canada’s ability to advance from the group stage, promising exciting football and a display of the team’s true Canadian spirit. With the top two teams from each group and four best third-place finishers progressing to the round of 16, Canada aims to make a strong comeback after missing the 2024 tournament.

The Canadian squad includes promising 15-year-old attacker Melyna Alexis, described by Herst as a skillful and speedy player with a bright future ahead. Despite challenges faced during preparations and a friendly loss to Ivory Coast, the team remains united and determined in their quest for success at the World Cup.

Among the tournament’s formidable opponents are defending champions North Korea, Spain, Nigeria, France, and Samoa, each bringing a unique history and competitive spirit to the event. Canada’s journey in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup promises to be filled with action and determination as they strive to make their mark on the international stage.
