Hootsuite CEO Resigns Amid Controversy

Date:

The Chief Executive Officer of Hootsuite has resigned following months of defending a contract between the company and a controversial U.S. government department. This move paves the way for the firm’s founder to return on an interim basis.

Irina Novoselsky’s departure and Ryan Holmes’s reappointment were both announced on Monday through separate LinkedIn posts, which did not address the recent criticisms faced by the company.

Expressing his excitement, Holmes stated that he was delighted to return to the company. Novoselsky, on the other hand, mentioned her gratitude for leading Hootsuite and explained that with the company now profitable, she and the board believed it was the right time for a leadership transition.

Holmes established the Vancouver-based company, specializing in social media marketing tools, in 2008. He previously led the company until 2019, when he stepped down. Reports indicated that Holmes had attempted to sell the business for $750 million but was unsuccessful.

Novoselsky assumed the leadership role in 2023 amid significant changes in the social media landscape following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. Hootsuite faced increased competition and profitability challenges at the time.

Despite facing criticism, Novoselsky retained the contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which came to light three months ago. This sparked protests and calls for Hootsuite to terminate its contracts and issue a public apology.

Moving ahead, the focus for Hootsuite will be on advancing product development at the intersection of AI and social media. Under Novoselsky’s leadership, the company emphasized AI-based software to assist clients in generating content, freeing up social media managers for other tasks.

Although some social media platforms have integrated similar tools, Hootsuite remains committed to AI development. Holmes mentioned plans to further invest in technology to enhance customer and internal operations efficiency.

Holmes expressed his enthusiasm for leading Hootsuite into the next AI-driven era, emphasizing the company’s strong foundation in enterprise business, data capabilities, AI advancements, and disciplined operations.

The future CEO succession plan and the status of the DHS contract under Holmes’s leadership remain uncertain. Hootsuite responded to inquiries about these matters by stating that the company is in a strong position and Holmes will drive business acceleration.

Novoselsky clarified earlier this year that Hootsuite has collaborated with government entities worldwide, including the U.S. government, over the past 15 years. She emphasized that the company’s use-case with ICE does not involve individual tracking or surveillance, which is explicitly prohibited under their terms of service.
