Rock Hall of Fame Welcomes Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Wu-Tang Clan, and More

Date:

Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, Queen Latifah, Oasis, Sade, and Joy Division/New Order are set to join the prestigious ranks of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Additionally, first-time nominees Wu-Tang Clan and the late Luther Vandross will also be inducted. The announcement was made during the recent episode of “American Idol.” To qualify for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior. The final list of inductees was determined through a voting process involving over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals.

Phil Collins, known for his soft rock style, has had a successful career both as a solo artist and as a member of Genesis. His iconic hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “One More Night” have earned him eight Grammy Awards. Sade, another nominee, is recognized for her soul-jazz music, with popular tracks such as “Smooth Operator” and “The Sweetest Taboo.” Wu-Tang Clan, celebrated for their groundbreaking rap debut album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers),” have been acknowledged as innovators in the genre.

Iron Maiden, a pivotal figure in the new wave of British heavy metal, received their long-awaited nomination. The late Luther Vandross, with hits like “Here and Now” and “Any Love,” has left a lasting impact on music, inspiring artists like Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Joy Division and New Order, influential post-punk bands from Manchester, England, will also be honored. Oasis, the Britpop sensation led by Noel and Liam Gallagher, is making a comeback with their induction.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with a televised broadcast planned for December on ABC and Disney+. The following year, the ceremony will return to Cleveland, the hall’s traditional home.

Apart from the performer category, inductees can be recognized under special committee categories, including early influence, musical excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. This year, Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons will be honored with the early influence award. The musical excellence category will pay tribute to Linda Creed and producers Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin. The legendary Ed Sullivan will posthumously receive the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award for his significant contributions to music and breaking racial barriers in American entertainment.

Not making it to this year’s induction are nominees like Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, INXS, Melissa Etheridge, and others. Last year’s inductees included Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Soundgarden, Salt-N-Pepa, and more.
