Vermont Farmer Surprised by Birth of Six Lambs
A sheep named Teemu, inspired by Hockey Hall of Famer Teemu Selänne, exceeded expectations by giving birth to sextuplets at Clover and Bee Farm in Underhill, Vermont. The owner, Anne O’Connor, was taken aback by the unexpected arrival of six lambs, as she was only anticipating twins. This rare occurrence, with some sources citing odds of one in a million or more, left O’Connor amazed.
The event unfolded when O’Connor, who manages the farm alongside her husband, Gunnar, heard sounds of activity in the field. Recognizing the unique sounds that ewes make when communicating with their offspring, she rushed to Teemu’s side. With the birth already in progress, Teemu delivered the first lamb, followed swiftly by the second and then a third.
The high number of lambs necessitated O’Connor’s assistance in tending to the newborns, ensuring they could breathe properly by clearing mucus from their mouths. Despite the challenges, O’Connor, who also works as an ER and pediatric physician, provided care and encouragement, especially to a struggling lamb.
The subsequent arrivals of the fourth and fifth lambs, followed by the sixth a bit later, surprised everyone. The calm demeanor of the sixth lamb stood out among its siblings, leading O’Connor to humorously speculate about its laid-back nature.
In a nod to Teemu’s Finnish roots, the six lambs were named after the numbers one through six in Finnish – Yksi (1), Kaksi (2), Kolme (3), Neljä (4), Viisi (5), and Kuusi (6).
Dinesh Dadarwal, an associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan, shared insights on the rarity of sheep sextuplets, drawing from his experience with similar cases. He highlighted the potential factors behind such multiple births, pointing to genetic mutations that can influence ovulation.
O’Connor closely monitored Teemu and her lambs during the initial week, providing extra care, including bottle feeding and round-the-clock attention. Despite facing a recent breast cancer diagnosis, O’Connor found solace and hope in the birth of the lambs, symbolizing resilience and the continuation of life on the farm during challenging times.
