A former employee of Beast Industries has filed a lawsuit against MrBeast’s media production company, alleging that she was terminated from her position as a social media manager after returning from maternity leave. The lawsuit, brought by Lorrayne Mavromatis in federal court in North Carolina, claims that the company violated federal laws protecting employees’ rights to take unpaid, job-protected leave for childbirth and medical reasons. Mavromatis also filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, citing discrimination based on sex, pregnancy, and retaliation.
Mavromatis stated that she worked continuously after giving birth and even while in the delivery room, where she felt compelled to be present despite still experiencing postpartum bleeding. Less than three weeks after resuming full-time work, she alleges that she was fired.
The spokesperson for Beast Industries dismissed the lawsuit as a “clout-chasing complaint,” asserting that Mavromatis’ position was eliminated during a team reorganization led by the new head of ecommerce. The company provided evidence of Mavromatis acknowledging receipt of the employee handbook, including policies related to the Family and Medical Leave Act.
The lawsuit sheds light on the internal culture of Beast Industries, portraying it as a toxic and sexist workplace that the company has been striving to improve amid its expansion into new ventures. This legal action comes at a time when the company, founded by Jimmy Donaldson aka MrBeast, is diversifying into television and financial services. Donaldson has publicly acknowledged the need to create a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees.
Mavromatis’ legal challenge comes amidst Beast Industries’ efforts to address past controversies surrounding workplace harassment. The company underwent an investigation resulting in the termination of several employees due to instances of misconduct. While Donaldson has expanded his presence beyond YouTube into mainstream entertainment, Beast Industries continues to grow its workforce and attract talent from renowned companies.
The lawsuit also reveals details about the intense work environment at Beast Industries, where employees were allegedly urged to go to great lengths to fulfill their duties. Mavromatis recounted joining a company meeting from her hospital bed during labor out of fear of losing her job if she refused. The legal filing describes Mavromatis’ progression within the company and her interactions with company leadership, including uncomfortable encounters with Donaldson.
The Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund is supporting Mavromatis in her case, highlighting the importance of holding workplaces accountable for addressing harassment and fostering a culture of transparency and respect.
This lawsuit against Beast Industries adds to the ongoing scrutiny of the company’s internal practices as it navigates expansion and cultural transformation efforts under the leadership of Jimmy Donaldson.
