Canada’s hopes for its inaugural world curling mixed doubles gold medal were dashed as they succumbed to a 6-4 defeat against Sweden in the semifinals. The duo from Gimli, Manitoba, Kadriana and Colton Lott, found themselves trailing 5-2 to the Swedish team after conceding a critical steal of three points in the fifth end. Despite rallying with two points in the sixth end to narrow the gap, the game was sealed by Therese Westman and Robin Ahlberg with a crucial point in the seventh end.
Reflecting on the match, Kadriana Lott expressed, “I thought we had a strong performance and executed many good shots. However, there were some instances where luck wasn’t on our side. Sweden played well, and it was a highly competitive mixed doubles game. We had our opportunities, but also some misses, so it’s disappointing. Nevertheless, we still have a shot at a medal, and we will come back stronger tomorrow.”
In the final, Sweden will take on Australia, who caused an upset by defeating the reigning champions 7-6 in the other semifinal, securing victory in an extra end with a decisive point. Canada will face Italy in the bronze medal match.
Since its inception in 2008, Canada has claimed two silver and two bronze medals in the mixed doubles championship.
