Honda Motor Pauses $15B EV Complex in Canada

Date:

Honda Motor is reportedly planning to definitively halt the development of its $15 billion electric vehicle complex in Canada, as per multiple reports from Japanese media sources. The Japanese automaker had initially paused the development of the project in Alliston, Ontario in May last year. At that time, Honda stated that it would assess the EV market’s progress over a two-year period before making a decision on the project’s future.

Reports suggest that sluggish demand for electric vehicles in the United States has led Honda to freeze its investment in Canadian EV infrastructure and shift its focus to hybrid vehicles as the centerpiece of its North American strategy. In response to inquiries about the news, Honda Canada stated that they had no updates to provide at the moment.

The project, announced in 2024, was intended to include a vehicle assembly plant and battery production facilities, with substantial funding expected from federal and provincial sources. Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli of Ontario emphasized that public funds would only be allocated to Honda if the project moved forward. He highlighted Honda’s expressed commitment to Canada despite acknowledging challenges in the automotive sector due to tariffs and global uncertainties.

Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the industry’s challenges, particularly referencing U.S. tariffs impacting the auto sector. He emphasized the government’s dedication to supporting companies in the industry to navigate challenges and secure beneficial deals for Canada.

Gabrielle Landry, a spokesperson for federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, noted that the automotive sector, both in North America and globally, is undergoing significant transformations. Landry highlighted how U.S. policy changes affecting fuel efficiency standards and EV incentives have influenced automakers’ investment decisions in electric vehicles.

The reported decision by Honda to cease development is part of a broader trend of stalled EV projects in Canada. General Motors ceased production of its BrightDrop electric delivery van, while Ford Motor Co. shifted its focus from EVs to pickup trucks in Ontario. Conservative MP Adam Chambers critiqued the government’s EV policy, suggesting a need to reassess strategies and prioritize access to the U.S. vehicle market to sustain the Canadian auto industry.

In 2021, Honda manufactured over 400,000 vehicles in Canada, ranking as the second-largest producer after Toyota. The production encompassed both traditional gasoline and hybrid variants of popular models like the Civic and CR-V.
