“AirAsia Orders 150 Canadian A220 Jets from Airbus”

Date:

Airbus Canada has secured a significant contract with AirAsia for the acquisition of 150 Canadian-manufactured A220 jets, representing a substantial investment in Quebec’s aviation sector. This deal, the largest single firm order for these narrow-body aircraft, will be fulfilled at the Mirabel assembly plant located north of Montreal. The first A220-300 is anticipated to be produced in the first quarter of 2028, as confirmed by AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes.

Lars Wagner, the head of Airbus’ commercial aircraft division, emphasized the pivotal role Quebec plays in the global aviation industry. Following the majority acquisition of Bombardier’s CSeries program in 2018, the French-owned company rebranded it as the A220.

The agreement highlights the deepening trade relations between Canada and Southeast Asian nations, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who lauded the collaboration as a step towards economic diversification beyond traditional markets. The deal signifies a mutual commitment to growth and resilience amid ongoing challenges.

Airbus has encountered production obstacles at its Montreal plant, particularly in meeting output targets necessary for profitability. Despite these challenges, Airbus Canada CEO Guillaume Chevasson expressed optimism about the program’s trajectory towards profitability, aiming to increase production to 13 planes per month by early 2028. The assembly of all 150 AirAsia planes will take place at the Mirabel facility, which has seen a substantial increase in its workforce in recent years.

The announcement was met with enthusiasm by stakeholders, symbolized by the exchange of gifts between Carney, Wagner, and Fernandes. While risks persist for governments involved, the deal represents a significant milestone for the aviation sector in Quebec. The order of 150 A220 jets by AirAsia underscores a strategic move amidst market uncertainties, positioning the airline for future growth and resilience.

The A220-300, with a capacity ranging from 100 to 160 passengers and a flight range of up to 6,700 kilometers, has garnered global recognition with over 500 deliveries to various operators worldwide. The strategic collaboration between Airbus and AirAsia signals a transformative opportunity for the aviation industry, showcasing Quebec’s prominence in the global aerospace landscape.
