“Alcatraz Coyote’s Record Swim Stuns Experts”

Date:

A wild dog amazed experts by swimming a remarkable 3 kilometers across ocean currents. Camilla Fox, the founder of Project Coyote, expressed astonishment at the journey of the “Alcatraz Coyote,” calling it unprecedented in her experience with wild canines. Initially believed to have swum from San Francisco to Alcatraz Island, the male coyote was later discovered to have traveled twice that distance, originating from Angel Island, a California state park.

Witnesses described the bedraggled coyote struggling to climb onto Alcatraz’s rocky shore, resembling a drenched rat. While researchers confirmed its successful arrival on the island, the exact reason for its journey remains unknown. Speculating on the coyote’s motives, Fox suggested the animal likely sought to venture beyond its island confines in search of a mate and territory.

Noteworthy for their resilience and adaptability, coyotes, like the Alcatraz Coyote, can surprise observers with their actions. The island, once home to the infamous Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, now serves as a conservation area for diverse seabird and marine life. Joel Berger, a wildlife ecology professor, theorized that the coyote might have sought sanctuary on Alcatraz after facing aggression in its birth area.

Coyotes, native to North America, play a crucial role in ecosystems, yet are often misunderstood and persecuted. Fox’s Project Coyote aims to educate the public on the significance of apex predators like coyotes and promote peaceful coexistence. Ongoing research at the University of California Davis is delving into the DNA of coyotes around Angel Island and San Francisco to deepen understanding of these creatures.

The Alcatraz Coyote is part of a group of 14 that colonized Angel Island following a similar incident in 2017. Fox eagerly awaits the next chapter in the coyote’s journey, hoping to learn whether it returns to Angel Island or ventures to a new territory.
