The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has exonerated a Peel Regional Police officer following the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man armed with a knife in a Mississauga residence last year. SIU director Joseph Martino stated that no criminal charges would be pursued in this case as he closed the file.
The SIU’s recently released report outlined the events that transpired on December 11, 2025, at a Britannia Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard location. According to the investigation, the young man called a family member to the basement, where he attacked them with a knife, causing injury. The injured individual sought help from a neighbor and contacted the police.
Upon police arrival, the residence was secured, and a family member informed officers of the man’s deteriorating mental health due to medication non-compliance and previous suicidal ideation. Bodycam footage was reviewed as part of the inquiry, illustrating the unfolding incident.
After locating the man barricaded in a basement bathroom, officers commanded him to exit with his hands visible, but he did not comply. Using a sledgehammer, police breached the bathroom door and found the man inside. Despite orders to show his hands, the man was unresponsive.
Following a Taser deployment, the man armed with a knife lunged at an officer, prompting the use of lethal force. The officers fired multiple rounds, resulting in the man’s death. Despite scrutiny over the final shots, Martino deemed the officer justified in defending against a perceived lethal threat.
The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital, with Martino highlighting that the officer acted in self-defense during a critical moment. The director emphasized ongoing threat perception due to the man’s retained knife, supporting the officer’s actions.
