Last summer in Ontario’s Muskoka cottage country, the sound of lions roaring at the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary sparked controversy among residents, leading to a divide in opinions about future lion accommodations.
Following the temporary housing of seven African lions rescued from a Quebec zoo by A Humane World for Animals, some locals near the sanctuary in Rosseau urged a focus on native wildlife rather than exotic species. However, sanctuary director Linda Glimps expressed openness to potentially accepting lions again in the future if needed.
The sanctuary’s involvement with the lions, which arrived in May and were later relocated, was shrouded in secrecy due to ongoing legal matters. Despite initial silence, Glimps eventually informed neighbors about the lion housing arrangement.
While the sanctuary received over $600,000 to construct a temporary lion enclosure, Glimps clarified that it was not intended for permanent use. The presence of the lions, particularly the loud roars heard by nearby residents like Carolyn Pearce, caused disruptions and health concerns for some individuals.
Pearce, a former volunteer at the sanctuary, had to temporarily leave her home due to the disturbance caused by the lions. Her son-in-law, Hap Wilson, supported the sanctuary’s wildlife rehabilitation efforts but emphasized the importance of considering the impact on neighboring residents.
Despite mixed reactions from the community, Glimps highlighted that the lion enclosure met regulatory standards and did not generate excessive noise. Moving forward, discussions are ongoing with the Township of Muskoka Lakes regarding the enclosure’s compliance with building regulations.
As the community reflects on the lion housing experience, Glimps emphasized the need for transparent communication and mutual understanding if similar situations arise in the future.
