Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at Royal Alex and president of the Alberta Medical Association’s emergency medicine section, disclosed that the individual died on May 8. Despite not being present during the event, Thirsk was briefed by colleagues the following day due to his AMA role.
Expressing growing frustration, Thirsk highlighted his prior warnings about overcrowding and resource shortages. He labeled the patient’s death as a validation of his previous concerns, emphasizing that deaths in the emergency department and waiting room have been a known issue.
Sarah Hoffman, the Opposition NDP’s critic for hospitals and surgical facilities, mentioned in a legislative session that a person died in the Royal Alexandra Hospital waiting room after being brought in by EMS. Dr. Brian Wirzba, an internal medicine doctor and AMA president in Edmonton, confirmed the incident on May 8 involving a man who received initial treatment but was left in the waiting room due to overcrowding.
Wirzba pointed out that the recent deaths, including the one at Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton, underscore how patients are perishing in places meant for treatment. Alberta Health Services stated its commitment to safety and quality care, initiating an investigation and Quality Assurance Review regarding the case.
