“Nova Scotia Wind Farm Project Secures Major Investment”

Date:

A wind farm project in Antigonish and Guysborough counties is advancing towards construction, with plans for 28 turbines and 176 megawatts of capacity. The Upper Afton Wind Project has recently obtained environmental assessment approval from the provincial government. This initiative is a collaboration between the Membertou Development Corporation and EverWind, a Canadian energy firm. The construction of the wind farm is scheduled to commence in 2027, providing employment opportunities for 200 to 250 individuals during the construction phase.

The wind farm, set to occupy a 219-hectare area near various rural communities such as Upper Afton, Merland, New France, Upper Big Tracadie, South Merland, and Rear Monastery, will be adjacent to the Tracadie River Wilderness Area. Once operational in 2029, the project is expected to sustain around eight full- and part-time jobs for approximately 35 years. The province anticipates an annual municipal tax revenue of about $1.5 million from the wind farm.

This renewable energy project will contribute to the production of green hydrogen. To ensure environmental and public health protection, the wind farm must adhere to 58 specified terms and conditions. In a recent development, EverWind secured a significant capital investment of $175 million US (equivalent to approximately $240 million Canadian) from American asset management company Nuveen, marking a pivotal milestone for the company.
