Katie Miller’s daughter, Octavia, expressed an interest in playing hockey this season, prompting the family from Eel River Bar First Nation, also known as Ugpi’ganjig, to immerse themselves in the sport. Eager to introduce her daughters, Octavia and Pyper, to the world of professional hockey, Miller decided to attend a Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) game.
The family had the opportunity to watch a regular-season match between the Montréal Victoire and the Boston Fleet, both of which have secured spots in the PWHL playoffs. In preparation for the game, Miller collaborated with her aunt, Patty Miller, to organize tickets and accommodations. To add a personal touch and honor their Indigenous heritage, Miller crafted ribbon sweaters inspired by traditional Indigenous ribbon skirts for the family to wear to the game.
The sweaters featured designs symbolizing their favorite player, Abby Roque, the first Indigenous player to join the U.S. women’s national team and currently playing as a forward for the Victoire. The family’s attire blended their Indigenous roots with a modern style, showcasing their cultural pride.
Attending her first-ever hockey game, Patty was seated near the Boston Fleet bench and found the experience inspiring, expressing a desire to attend more games in the future. The family received a warm reception at the game, with others admiring their handmade sweaters. A woman even gifted Octavia a collection of PWHL hockey cards, further enhancing their memorable experience.
For Patty, the outing provided a valuable opportunity to bond with her family and create lasting memories at a professional hockey event. The vibrant atmosphere and exciting gameplay left a positive impression on the family, emphasizing the inclusive and spirited nature of the sports community.
