The IWK Health Centre in Halifax is addressing a shortage of radiologists by collaborating with Nova Scotia Health. Following a workplace assessment aimed at improving the diagnostic imaging department, an internal memo revealed the departure of two doctors and plans to implement recommendations for rebuilding the team.
While the IWK is funded for nine full-time radiology positions, only 3.8 are currently filled. To maintain clinical services, the hospital is receiving support from Nova Scotia Health’s central zone radiology team. Efforts are underway to address recruitment and vacancy management strategies.
In addition to the radiologist shortage, the hospital is also experiencing a 30% vacancy rate for medical radiation technologists, leading to extended wait times for routine mammograms. Health Minister Michelle Thompson mentioned ongoing recruitment efforts and the upcoming graduation of a double cohort from Dalhousie University’s medical radiological technology program as part of the solution.
The collaboration between IWK and Nova Scotia Health ensures continued diagnostic support for women and children in the region. This partnership has been crucial in navigating the staffing challenges faced by the hospital.
