“Atlético Ottawa Stuns Toronto FC 3-1 in Canadian Championship”

Date:

Toronto FC’s head coach, Robin Fraser, expressed disappointment in his team’s performance as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Atlético Ottawa in the 2026 Telus Canadian Championship preliminary round. Fraser mentioned the lack of assertiveness at crucial moments and described the goals conceded as regrettable.

The upset victory for Ottawa was led by Ballou Tabla, who scored a hat-trick, securing Atlético’s first-ever win against TFC. Tabla emphasized his desire to progress in the competition and expressed satisfaction in making his teammates happy.

The turning point came in the 71st minute when Tabla equalized for Ottawa, followed by two more goals in quick succession. Atlético’s head coach, Diego Mejia, highlighted the importance of building momentum from this win to enhance their performance in future matches.

Despite taking an early lead through DeAndre Kerr, TFC struggled to find the net again, with veteran Jonathan Osorio acknowledging Ottawa’s effective capitalization on their errors. Injuries to key players forced TFC to field young talent, providing them with valuable experience.

Looking ahead, TFC aims to bounce back in their upcoming MLS fixture against Miami, shifting focus from their Canadian Championship disappointment. Meanwhile, Ottawa progresses to face the winner of the FC Supra versus Woodbridge Strikers match in the next round of the tournament.

The Telus Canadian Championship serves as a significant domestic competition, with teams vying for the Voyageurs Cup and a spot in the prestigious CONCACAF Champions Cup. As TFC regroups for league action, Atlético aims to improve their CPL standing after a challenging start to the season.
