Joni Mitchell and Drake are set to be honored with special accolades at the upcoming 2025 SOCAN Awards ceremony. These two prolific songwriters, representing different eras, are among the esteemed individuals being recognized at the event dedicated to Canadian songwriters, composers, and music publishers.
Mitchell is slated to receive the Cultural Impact Award for her iconic 1969 track “Both Sides Now,” a composition that has left an enduring impact on the music and cultural landscape, inspiring multiple generations with its timeless appeal and artistic depth.
Drake, on the other hand, will be presented with his fourth consecutive award for Songwriter of the Year in the performer category, acknowledging his significant influence as one of the music industry’s most prominent voices.
The SOCAN Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 29 at Toronto’s Rebel concert venue, where winners across various categories will be announced during the event.
In addition to Mitchell and Drake, other notable figures being honored this year include the songwriting trio of Lowell, bülow, and Nathan Ferraro, who will be jointly recognized for their international achievement in contributing to Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
Toronto producer Boi-1da will also be celebrated with the Global Impact Award for his impactful contributions to rap and R&B music, having worked on tracks for acclaimed artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, and Drake.
Each award recipient will be presented with “The SOCAN,” a unique trophy that also functions as a musical instrument. This year, the trophy will feature custom bronze crotales tuned with notes from “Both Sides Now.”
