A newly found spider species in the tropical rainforests of Australia has amazed scientists with its unique hunting method that propels prey airborne using a spring-loaded silk snare. The spider, known as the “ballista spider,” constructs a cone-shaped trap that flings green tree ants into its web.
The discovery, detailed in a recent article in Current Biology, showcases the extraordinary behavior of these arachnids. Ajay Narendra, a biology professor at Macquarie University in Australia, expressed awe at observing the spider’s hunting technique firsthand.
Initially seen by researcher Greg Anderson in 2022, the spider’s ability to catch green tree ants in mid-air sparked curiosity among scientists. Following the sighting, a team from Macquarie University embarked on a mission to study the spider’s behavior in 2023, using high-speed cameras to document the process.
Measuring between three to five millimeters long, the spiders operate nocturnally, spending daylight hours concealed under leaves before emerging at dusk to construct their traps. By attaching silk tension lines to anchor points and forming a cone structure, the spider lures green tree ants that become ensnared and are catapulted into the air upon struggling.
The researchers believe the spider uses pheromones in its silk to specifically attract green tree ants. This targeted approach allows the spider to capture its prey without engaging directly with the formidable insects, presenting an evolutionary advantage.
Further investigations are planned to analyze the spider silk and determine the presence of pheromones that aid in prey specialization. The study sheds light on the intricate hunting tactics of these tiny yet remarkable creatures, showcasing the wonders of nature that continue to be uncovered in the modern era.
