Unifor, the union representing over 5,000 workers at Ford Motor Company of Canada, has officially approved a new three-year collective agreement. The agreement entails a yearly wage increase of three percent, the continuation of a cost-of-living allowance (COLA), and an outlined $1.2 billion investment in Canadian manufacturing. The ratification saw a 74 percent approval from Unifor Ford members under the master agreement, with salaried bargaining unit members at Locals 240 and 1324 voting 97 percent and 100 percent, respectively.
Unifor National President Lana Payne expressed satisfaction with the ratified agreement, stating that despite the challenges faced by Canadian autoworkers and the industry at large, the deal provides significant benefits and stability. The negotiation process aimed at building upon the successes of the previous year.
This development occurs amidst ongoing challenges for North American automakers due to factors like U.S. tariffs, evolving trade policies, and slower-than-expected adoption of electric vehicles. Unifor Local 200 President John D’Agnolo emphasized that Ford’s decision to invest further in Canada reflects the strong consumer support for the brand in the country.
As part of the agreement, Ford commits an additional $700 million to enhance production at the Essex Engine Plant and support the expansion of the 7.3-litre engine production in Essex. Additionally, a pre-planned $550 million investment in the Oakville Assembly Complex will be realized during the agreement’s duration. Ford officials emphasized the company’s enduring commitment to Canada, highlighting investments in various manufacturing facilities.
CEO Jim Farley underscored the importance of the agreement in fostering long-term growth and competitiveness. The deal also includes provisions such as a moratorium on facility closures, productivity bonuses, retirement incentives, and enhanced employee benefits. Ford’s dedication to its workforce and Canada’s future is a central theme of the agreement.
