“Trump Targets Massie as GOP Primary Breaks Spending Records”

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump is once again displaying his firm control over the Republican Party by seeking to remove the Republican congressman who opposed him on the Epstein files issue. Thomas Massie, a long-standing representative from Kentucky, faces a crucial primary on Tuesday to secure his spot as the Republican candidate in the upcoming midterm election. Trump has thrown his support behind a challenger to Massie, urging Republicans to vote him out and leading to a surge in campaign spending, setting a new record for a House primary.

Trump’s public disdain for Massie has been evident, with the president openly criticizing him on social media, labeling him as “a major sleazebag,” “disloyal,” “ungracious,” and “the worst and most unreliable Republican Congressman in the history of our Country.” Massie gained national prominence in 2025 for leading efforts in Congress to release Department of Justice files related to the Epstein investigation, a move that faced strong opposition from Trump.

Despite Trump’s declining popularity among the general electorate, he has proven his significant influence within the Republican base by successfully targeting Republicans who he believes have opposed him. The recent defeat of Senator Bill Cassidy in Louisiana, who voted against Trump in the impeachment proceedings, and the removal of five Republican state senators in Indiana who rejected Trump’s redistricting proposals, underscore Trump’s ongoing sway over the party.

In Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, which spans across various regions, registered Republicans will decide Massie’s fate as he competes against Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL supported by key Trump advisors. Gallrein’s campaign emphasizes his military background, with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth criticizing Massie for his opposition to various issues without achieving tangible results. As the primary approaches, voters like Tonya Young are grappling with the balance between loyalty and the need for diverse perspectives within the party.
