A decade has passed since a catastrophic wildfire ravaged Fort McMurray, Alberta, destroying around 2,400 buildings and resulting in nearly $9 billion in damages. Dubbed “The Beast,” the fire began on May 1, 2016, and swiftly engulfed the city two days later.
Rachelle Briscoe and her three siblings were present in the city at the time, part of the over 80,000 individuals compelled to evacuate as flames devoured the community. Today, a decade later, she resides on Mayne Island in British Columbia and is undergoing training to serve as a volunteer firefighter.
In an interview with CBC’s “On The Island,” Briscoe shared her vivid recollections of the event and how she is now gaining insight into the experiences on the opposite side of the fire line.
Reflecting on the day the fire reached Fort McMurray a decade ago, Briscoe recalled the ominous signs preceding the evacuation notice, with birds fleeing and a smoky, dark sky. She vividly described the chaotic evacuation, where she had to hastily flee on her bicycle without essential belongings, eventually seeking refuge with her siblings.
Returning to Fort McMurray later to assist in setting up the recreation center as a support hub for remaining locals, Briscoe recounted the surreal scenes of devastation and community resilience in the aftermath of the disaster.
When asked about the impact of the fire on her life trajectory, Briscoe highlighted a newfound respect for firefighters and first responders, emphasizing the influence of the incident in steering her towards pursuing volunteer firefighting.
Regarding her current firefighter training, Briscoe expressed a deepening appreciation for the physical challenges and sacrifices firefighters endure, particularly after donning the full firefighting gear for the first time during a recent training session.
As the anniversary of the Fort McMurray fire approaches and another fire season looms, Briscoe acknowledged the valuable insights gained from her training and engagement with the firefighting community, underscoring her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to such a dedicated and supportive network.
