Long Point Bird Observatory, situated on a 40-kilometre sandspit near Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario, designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a sanctuary for various wildlife. Being the oldest continuously operating bird sanctuary in North America, the observatory is facing challenges due to climate change.
Recent research, detailed in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on June 24, reveals concerning trends at Long Point. Tree swallows, a key species in the area, have been laying fewer eggs and decreasing in size since monitoring began in 1969. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan and Birds Canada using historical data from the observatory, also shows a 43% decline in aerial insectivores like tree swallows and a more than 60% drop in insect numbers since 1977.
Lead author of the study, Charlotte Probst, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, highlighted the importance of tree swallows as a model organism for research due to their nesting behavior. The mismatch in timing between the emergence of insects, vital for the swallows’ diet, and the birds’ breeding season due to warmer temperatures caused by climate change poses a significant challenge. This phenological mismatch has been increasing by over three days per decade since 1977, leading to adverse effects on the birds’ health and reproduction.
Additionally, declining insect populations, attributed to changes in vegetation and climate, exacerbate the situation. Researchers emphasize the need for local action to mitigate insect declines, such as planting native wildflowers, reducing pesticide usage, and creating habitats that support insect populations. Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensuring the survival and well-being of tree swallows and the broader ecosystem they are a part of.
