Staff at the Humane Society of North Texas were faced with a challenging situation when they encountered Elmer, a frightened kitten covered in strong adhesive, unsure if he would make it through the night. Discovered by a passerby in a bucket of glue near an industrial area, the four-month-old feline was brought to the shelter in Fort Worth, Texas in mid-April.
Misty Mendes, the director of shelter medicine, described the distressing condition Elmer was in, with glue all over his body, including his head, ears, mouth, and nose. The urgency to remove the glue was critical to prevent it from hardening and obstructing his airways.
Despite the initial uncertainty on how to tackle the situation, the staff’s persistent efforts paid off as they successfully freed Elmer from the adhesive. Dubbed after the glue brand, Elmer is now thriving in his new environment.
The rescue team’s innovative approach included trying various substances like dish soap, mineral oil, and bandage removal spray before finding success with canola oil. Through continuous care, Elmer gradually recovered, with staff devoting hours to massaging him with oil, providing warm baths, and feeding him through a syringe.
Following his rescue, Elmer found a loving foster home with Leah Owens, a 72-year-old woman who was deeply moved by his story. Owens, who experienced a recent loss, found solace and joy in Elmer’s presence, deciding to adopt him permanently.
Owens shared her heartwarming experience with Elmer, emphasizing the positive impact of fostering animals and advocating for adoption over purchasing pets. Despite the newfound attention, she remains committed to promoting animal welfare and encouraging more people to consider fostering as a rewarding experience.
Elmer, now embraced as a cherished member of Owens’ household, displays a resilient and playful nature, showing no signs of trauma from his past ordeal. Owens affectionately describes him as fearless, affectionate, and occasionally mischievous, bringing laughter and companionship into her life.
