“Nova Scotia Faces Delays in Overseeing Doctor for Detox Services”

Date:

Nova Scotia Health halted overnight detox services at Cape Breton Regional Hospital in July, citing the need for two weeks to secure a new overseeing doctor. However, after nearly four months, Blair Kasouf, a retired lawyer and advocate for addiction medicine, emphasizes that individuals requiring substance-use withdrawal assistance cannot endure further delays.

Dr. David Martell, the province’s medical leader in addiction treatment, acknowledges the challenge in recruiting physicians for specialized services due to the demanding nature of the role. Despite this, the Sydney hospital has shifted its focus to outpatient care, with around 80% of patients receiving treatment through the day program at the recovery support center.

Martell emphasizes the health system’s capacity to manage withdrawal symptoms across various departments to ensure comprehensive care. While efforts for physician recruitment continue, he anticipates the addition of a doctor for inpatient detox services in the coming months.

Kasouf stresses the inadequacy of referring individuals with severe withdrawal symptoms to the emergency department, citing the strain on an already overwhelmed system. He notes the need for tailored care for those recovering from substance use, highlighting the complexities involved and the social aspects that must be addressed.

Kasouf raises concerns about using the emergency department as a primary resource for individuals with addictions, emphasizing that some may avoid seeking help or resort to substance use to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. He criticizes the practice as burdening ER staff and compromising care for other patients in critical need of medical attention.
