Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the RCMP’s autonomy in a recent statement, labeling the national police force’s leadership as “despicable” and alleging that they shielded the Liberal government and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from scrutiny. Poilievre asserted that had the RCMP fulfilled its duties without favoritism, Trudeau would have faced criminal charges. In an interview on YouTube with Northern Perspective, Poilievre pointed out Trudeau’s alleged legal transgressions, such as the 2016 Aga Khan scandal and the SNC-Lavalin affair, suggesting that the RCMP concealed potential criminal offenses.
Responding to Poilievre’s remarks, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme defended his team, refuting claims of political intervention. Under former Commissioner Brenda Lucki, the RCMP explored the option of prosecuting Trudeau for fraud related to his 2016 vacation but ultimately opted against it due to legal technicalities. The RCMP documents revealed that if the Ethics Commissioner had found Trudeau in violation of the Criminal Code, it would have prompted notification to the appropriate authorities, which did not occur, indicating no perceived offense by Dawson.
In regards to the SNC-Lavalin controversy, the RCMP maintained that insufficient evidence existed to press charges despite findings by the ethics commissioner that Trudeau breached the Conflict of Interest Act. Duheme emphasized that the investigation underwent thorough assessment and review despite challenges like limited access to cabinet confidences, expressing confidence in the decision not to pursue legal actions.
Addressing Poilievre’s accusations, Duheme asserted there was no interference in RCMP operations and extended an invitation for a dialogue to clarify any concerns. Brian Sauvé, president of the National Police Federation, echoed a sentiment of no political influence within the RCMP, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to professionalism and integrity. Poilievre’s office reiterated the importance of RCMP officers in upholding law enforcement and public safety, emphasizing the Conservative stance that accountability should apply to all individuals. Operational autonomy remains crucial for the RCMP to maintain integrity and prevent external interference in investigative matters.
