“B.C. Government Eases Sick Note Rules for Workers”

Date:

The British Columbia government has implemented new regulations to restrict when employers can request sick notes, aiming to ease the burden on doctors and prevent the further spread of illness among patients. According to a government announcement, the updated employment standards state that employers are prohibited from demanding a sick note for the first two health-related absences lasting up to five consecutive days within a year.

Health Minister Josie Osborne highlighted that the recent changes, effective from Wednesday, will enable sick individuals to recuperate at home without the added pressure of obtaining a sick note, consequently reducing the administrative workload on healthcare providers. Dr. Lisa Gaede, a family physician and representative of Doctors of B.C., emphasized that sick notes impose significant challenges on physicians and primary care providers, and the revised regulations will allow them to allocate more time to patients in need of medical assistance.

The decision to revamp the sick note requirements was influenced by feedback from healthcare professionals, who emphasized that most minor illnesses in adults, like the flu or common cold, typically resolve within five days based on scientific evidence. Labour Minister Jennifer Whiteside emphasized the inconvenience of requiring individuals with flu symptoms to visit their doctors for sick notes, which not only diverts resources from patients in genuine need but also heightens the risk of further illness transmission.

The government disclosed that health-related absences encompass situations where an employee or their immediate family member is unwell or injured. The move to eliminate sick note obligations aligns with the healthcare community’s plea for reduced administrative tasks that detract from patient care. The elimination of sick note requirements was a central pledge in the B.C. NDP’s electoral campaign last autumn. The province introduced Bill 11 in April, amending the Employment Standards Act regarding sick notes, with a commitment to implementing the changes before the onset of the fall respiratory illness season.
