“TV Show Boosts Interest in Alberta World Heritage Site”

Date:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta has experienced an increase in interest following a mention on a popular American TV show, with hopes for a busy summer season. The Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, located about 150 kilometers south of Calgary, was featured in an episode of “The Pitt,” a Golden Globe-winning medical drama.

The character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by actor Noah Wyle, expressed his desire to visit the landmark in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, stating, “I’ve never seen the badlands.” The site, historically used by Indigenous people to guide bison herds over a cliff for harvesting, features an interpretive center exploring Blackfoot culture, ecology, and archaeological discoveries.

Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing lead at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, noted an uptick in visitors attributing their interest to the TV show mention. Crow Shoe mentioned the positive impact on social media and email engagement following the show’s reference, expressing gratitude for the increased awareness and curiosity generated.

Designated a World Heritage Site in 1981, the buffalo jump typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe expressed optimism that the recent surge in interest will result in higher visitation during the peak season from May to September, aided by promotions like discounts through the Canada Strong Pass program.

Highlighting the site as part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, Crow Shoe emphasized collaboration among local destinations to enhance the overall visitor experience. To capitalize on the TV show’s exposure, Travel Alberta released a promotional video featuring characters superimposed on the buffalo jump’s cliffs, while Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir shared the TV clip on social media, showcasing the region’s rich history and cultural landmarks to a global audience.
