Catherine O’Hara Says Goodbye to Moira Rose

Date:

After more than six years embodying Moira Rose, Catherine O’Hara is bidding farewell to her iconic character. Known for her eccentric portrayal of the family matriarch on the popular series “Schitt’s Creek,” O’Hara is transitioning away from her longest-running role as the show’s sixth and final season airs to great acclaim.

In a recent interview with CBC’s Anna Maria Tremonti, O’Hara discussed the distinctions between herself and Moira, her fondness for elaborate outfits, and the benefits of improv training for everyone. This conversation marks the inaugural episode of Tremonti’s new podcast series “More with Anna Maria Tremonti,” set to debut on January 28.

Reflecting on her attachment to Moira, O’Hara admitted that the character has somewhat taken over her persona, expressing a reluctance to let go of portraying Moira. Despite her admiration for Moira’s boldness, O’Hara acknowledged that she lacks the character’s audacity in real life.

Having spent six years working closely with the “Schitt’s Creek” cast, O’Hara admitted her initial reservations about committing to a long-term project but ultimately found the experience to be rewarding and joyful. She credited her co-star, Eugene Levy, for persuading her to join the show, highlighting the talented and harmonious dynamic within the cast.

O’Hara’s career has been marked by a series of collaborative ventures, from her early days at Second City theatre to her work on “SCTV,” “Beetlejuice,” “Home Alone,” and now “Schitt’s Creek.” Emphasizing the importance of teamwork, O’Hara underscored her preference for collaborative projects over solo endeavors.

Despite her impressive body of work, O’Hara remains humble about her career trajectory, attributing much of her success to serendipity rather than meticulous planning. She expressed gratitude for the enriching experiences and relationships she has cultivated throughout her career, underscoring the joy she finds in collaborative work.
