“PM Carney Eyes Meeting with Chinese President at APEC Summit”

Date:

Ottawa is anticipating a potential meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping at an upcoming summit in South Korea, as disclosed by a high-ranking Canadian government official during a briefing on Thursday. Carney, emphasizing the importance of rejuvenating broad engagement with Beijing following strained relations in recent years, is scheduled to attend the APEC summit in Seoul. He mentioned previously that he foresees holding discussions with senior Chinese officials within the next month.

“We are optimistic about a possible meeting and are making arrangements accordingly… Our aim is to facilitate a meeting at APEC if feasible,” stated the senior government official when questioned about a potential encounter with Xi.

In August, China imposed preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, a year subsequent to Canada’s announcement of imposing a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles. Discussions on these disputes involving canola and electric vehicles took place between senior officials from Canada and China last Friday, as confirmed by Ottawa, although no immediate breakthrough was indicated.
