The Las Vegas Aces faced a tough challenge in Game 3 of the WNBA Finals, losing a 17-point lead in the final quarter. The game ultimately came down to one crucial offensive possession with just five seconds on the clock.
Despite the pressure, the Aces remained composed, relying on the presence of A’ja Wilson, a four-time MVP, in the key moments. Wilson’s turnaround jumper with 0.3 seconds remaining secured a 90-88 victory over the Phoenix Mercury, as she finished with an impressive 34 points and 14 rebounds.
Aces coach Becky Hammon had full confidence in Wilson, stating that there was no need for deliberation on who would take the final shot. Hammon emphasized, “You give the ball to A’ja and get out of the way.”
With a 3-0 lead in the WNBA Finals, the Aces are just one win away from clinching their third title in four seasons. Game 4 is set to take place in Phoenix on Friday.
Although Las Vegas seemed to have a comfortable lead of 76-59 entering the fourth quarter, the Mercury mounted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 84-83. Ultimately, it was Wilson’s clutch shot that sealed the victory for the Aces.
Wilson, standing tall at 6-foot-4, continued her stellar postseason performance, setting a new WNBA postseason record with 291 total points over 11 games. Alongside Wilson, Jackie Young contributed 21 points to the Aces’ triumph.
Despite the Mercury’s efforts, led by DeWanna Bonner’s 25 points and Satou Sabally’s 24, they fell short in Game 3. Copper’s 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, were not enough to overcome the Aces’ resilience.
The game took a concerning turn when Sabally had to leave the court after a collision with Young. Sabally’s condition following the injury was not immediately updated by Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts.
Las Vegas showcased their offensive prowess, particularly from beyond the arc, shooting 56.3% from 3-point range. Loyd’s impactful performance off the bench, sinking four 3-pointers in quick succession, helped the Aces maintain their lead.
Despite the loss, Tibbetts commended his team for their fighting spirit and resilience. He acknowledged the need for defensive improvements moving forward but praised his team’s character and determination.
As the series progresses, the Aces stand on the brink of championship glory, while the Mercury will look to rally back in Game 4 to keep their title hopes alive.
