Amid the launch of Alberta’s fall immunization campaign to the public, some residents faced challenges securing COVID-19 vaccine appointments. Health Link received over 10,000 calls solely for COVID vaccine inquiries, leading to significant call volume on the provincial health information line.
Phase one, initiated on Sept. 29, targeted high-risk groups like individuals with underlying health conditions, care home residents, healthcare workers, seniors receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, and homeless individuals. Phase two, launched on Monday, extended the COVID vaccine to all Albertans aged six and above for a fee of $100, while flu shots remained free for the general public.
Criticism persists as the province opts to charge the majority for the COVID vaccine, drawing disapproval from healthcare professionals and scientists. Concerned citizens like Elizabeth Smythe of Edmonton expressed frustration over the lack of inclusive vaccine eligibility for all seniors within the high-risk groups.
Moreover, Airdrie mother Cyrena Raymond-Fauteux encountered hurdles trying to book vaccine appointments for herself and her four-year-old child on Monday morning. Booking appointments for children under 12 required Health Link assistance, but Raymond-Fauteux struggled to get through, suggesting obstacles in accessing vaccines for parents and children.
Health Link acknowledged the overwhelming call volumes, receiving over 10,000 COVID immunization calls and 1,458 flu vaccine inquiries by noon. Primary Care Alberta urged Albertans to consider online booking options at primarycarealberta.ca/immunize due to extended call wait times. The system faced delays primarily due to increased family bookings, prompting adjustments in staffing to accommodate demand.
Despite challenges, Albertans’ strong interest in vaccination was evident through the surge in appointment inquiries. Raymond-Fauteux emphasized the need for accessible and prioritized vaccination efforts, highlighting the community’s willingness to participate if barriers like costs are removed.
