“Alphonso Davies’ World Cup Participation in Doubt”

Date:

Canada men’s national soccer team captain Alphonso Davies suffered a left hamstring injury during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semifinal match against Paris Saint-Germain, raising concerns about his participation in the upcoming World Cup. Bayern Munich disclosed that Davies will be sidelined for “several weeks” following the injury sustained in the 1-1 draw with PSG on Wednesday.

Canada Soccer stated that they are in constant communication with Bayern’s medical staff and are closely monitoring Davies’s condition. The focus is on aiding his recovery process by offering specialized soft tissue treatment to ensure his return to full fitness in time for the FIFA World Cup. Canada is set to kick off its World Cup campaign on June 12 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto, as the host nation alongside the United States and Mexico.

Davies has faced challenges staying fit ahead of the World Cup tournament. This recent injury marks his third setback since his return on December 8 from a lengthy layoff due to a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee. He previously dealt with a muscle fiber tear from February 22 to March 9 and a right hamstring injury from March 11 to April 2. Davies has not played for Canada since the ligament injury during Nations League action against the United States in March 2025.

The injury incident led to a dispute between Bayern and the Canadian national team, with Bayern alleging inadequate medical assessments for Davies before his return to Germany. Canada Soccer defended its protocols, stating that proper care procedures were followed.

As a key figure in Canada’s national team, Davies has contributed significantly to the squad with 15 goals and 17 assists in 58 appearances. Known for his speed and skill, the Edmonton native has been pivotal in Bayern’s success, winning multiple Bundesliga titles and the 2020 Champions League.

Davies’s injury setback poses a significant challenge for the Canadian team, which has faced a series of injury setbacks in recent months. The team is monitoring the recovery of players like Moise Bombito, Ali Ahmed, and Richie Laryea, who are working their way back to full fitness. Additionally, crucial members such as Tajon Buchanan, Stephen Eustaquio, and Alistair Johnston have only recently returned from their respective injury layoffs.
