“Antisemitism Crisis in Australia Sparks Calls for Stricter Gun Laws”

Date:

An extensive investigation in Australia, spurred by a tragic attack during a Hanukkah event late last year, highlighted the heightened sense of fear and vulnerability among the Jewish community in the country. The incident, where fifteen individuals lost their lives due to gunfire at a celebration on Bondi Beach in December, was carried out by Sajid and Naveed Akram using legally owned firearms in a nation known for stringent gun controls. Authorities linked the attack, which occurred amidst a series of antisemitic offenses in Australia, to the Islamic State group.

Following the mass shooting, a Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, the most authoritative form of inquiry in Australia, commenced public hearings in Sydney to examine the extent and nature of antisemitism within the country’s institutions and society. Over the next year, the commission will delve into various topics before releasing its final report in December.

Commissioner Virginia Bell noted the concerning surge in antisemitism not only in Australia but also in other Western countries, often tied to events in the Middle East. Witnesses at the inquiry, all Jewish Australians, shared personal encounters with hatred, some opting for anonymity out of safety concerns. One testimony recounted a distressing incident of verbal abuse directed at a woman wearing a Star of David necklace at a Sydney shopping mall.

The rise in antisemitic incidents, particularly following the Israel-Hamas conflict in 2023, has significantly impacted the Jewish community in Australia. Acts of hatred, assaults, and threats have become more prevalent, leading to heightened security measures at Jewish establishments. Witnesses expressed fears for their safety and some even contemplated leaving the country due to the escalating hostility.

In response to the growing threats, recommendations from the Royal Commission included calls for stricter gun laws and a weapons buyback program to address the risks associated with legally owned firearms. The tragic event at Bondi Beach has prompted a reevaluation of security protocols and a push for reforms by both federal and state governments in Australia. Naveed Akram, the surviving suspect, faces multiple charges, including terrorism-related offenses and counts of murder and attempted murder.
