Arbitration Rules Dylan Bibic Eligible for Track Worlds

Date:

An unusual ruling by an arbitrator has resulted in Dylan Bibic being added to Canada’s roster for the upcoming UCI Track Cycling World Championships, overturning a decision made by a national sports organization. Bibic, hailing from Mississauga, Ont., holds the seventh spot globally in men’s track endurance cycling and secured Canada’s spot at the world championships in the omnium discipline. However, he was initially left out of the squad for the championships in Santiago, Chile, due to changes made by Cycling Canada to the selection criteria for the omnium event, excluding 2024 performances.

Following Bibic’s grievance filed with the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada on August 12, arbitrator Praveen Sandhu mandated that Cycling Canada include Bibic in the team for the imminent track cycling world championships starting on October 22. The arbitrator criticized Cycling Canada for lacking a clear rationale in its decision-making process and failing to effectively communicate its reasoning, questioning the organization’s adherence to good faith principles despite its intentions.
