“Artemis II Astronauts Inspire Nation with Moon Mission”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney extended a warm welcome to the Artemis II astronauts in Ottawa, praising their recent journey around the moon as a source of inspiration for the entire nation. Carney emphasized the importance of teamwork, dedication, courage, and human ingenuity displayed by the astronauts, highlighting that this mission is just the beginning of greater achievements.

During their visit to Ottawa and Montreal from Wednesday to Friday, the Artemis II crew, comprising Canadian astronauts Jeremy Hansen and backup Jenni Gibbons alongside NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, are sharing their experiences from the mission with the public.

The crew’s expedition, which took place from April 1, involved circling the moon and returning to Earth, setting a new record for the farthest distance traveled from our planet in human history. This mission marks the initial phase of NASA’s plan to send humans back to the moon and lay the groundwork for future crewed missions to Mars.

Acknowledging the risks faced by the astronauts, Carney emphasized that these risks were taken to pave the way for greater opportunities. Hansen expressed his gratitude for the warm reception in Ottawa, symbolizing a return to the embrace of Canadians following their space voyage.

As part of their itinerary in Canada, the astronauts are engaging in various public events, interacting with students, connecting with stakeholders in the Canadian space industry, and granting select interviews. Hansen presented Carney with a framed maple leaf patch that accompanied the crew on their mission, while Carney reciprocated by gifting Hansen with the Canadian flag that flew over Parliament’s Peace Tower upon the crew’s return.

The crew participated in a public event at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, engaging in discussions about humanity’s lunar exploration decisions and answering queries from children present. Hansen reflected on the challenges faced during mission preparation, drawing parallels to global relationships and emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation.

Later in the day, the crew will head to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., where they will elaborate on their mission before an audience of parliamentarians and other key stakeholders.
