Attorney General Bondi Defends DOJ Amid Senate Criticism

Date:

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi clashed with Democrats during a Senate hearing in Washington, D.C., defending herself against allegations that the Justice Department was being politicized to benefit President Donald Trump and target his opponents. Bondi, in her first appearance at the Senate judiciary committee since confirmation, emphasized the department’s focus on combating real crime and praised local authorities for supporting the administration’s initiatives involving National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., and Memphis.

Senator Dick Durbin criticized Bondi for dismissing career prosecutors and agents who were involved in investigations criticized by Trump and for reducing efforts to tackle corruption and white-collar crime. Durbin accused Bondi of significantly altering the Justice Department in a detrimental manner, leaving a lasting negative impact on American history.

Durbin’s colleagues accused Bondi of being evasive, especially regarding discussions about prosecuting James Comey, the former FBI director facing charges related to false statements and obstruction of Congress. Bondi’s responses to questions regarding Trump’s social media post urging investigations into political adversaries like Comey were ambiguous.

Bondi and Senate Republicans highlighted what they perceived as political bias in the Justice Department during the Biden administration, citing past federal prosecutions involving Trump and investigations into Democratic figures such as Senator Bob Menendez. Bondi also faced inquiries about the handling of allegations surrounding Tom Homan, Trump’s deportations czar.

Bondi criticized Democrats for the government shutdown and lack of cooperation in addressing crime in U.S. cities. She avoided discussing the legal justifications for recent deadly strikes on vessels in the Caribbean and labeled Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro as a “narco terrorist.” Republicans on the panel raised concerns about the FBI analyzing phone records of Republican lawmakers as part of investigations into Trump’s election-related activities, calling it a breach of public trust.

The hearing highlighted the ongoing political tensions within the Justice Department and its interactions with lawmakers from both parties. Bondi’s responses and interactions underscored the deep divides surrounding law enforcement, political accountability, and the administration’s policies.
