British Columbia’s Jobs Minister, Ravi Kahlon, revealed that a local entity has expressed interest in acquiring the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team. This potential bid from a B.C.-based group follows a recent offer from a U.S. consortium to purchase and relocate the team to Las Vegas.
Kahlon shared that the group had been preparing for weeks to submit a bid for the Whitecaps. He described this development as positive for both fans and the province, emphasizing that the bid aims to retain the team in its current location.
The minister, a devoted Whitecaps supporter and season-ticket holder, mentioned that the prospective bidders had contacted his office independently and were not seeking assistance from the government. Notably, a group led by billionaire entrepreneur Grant Gustavson had previously announced a bid to acquire the Whitecaps and construct a soccer-specific stadium in Las Vegas.
While Kahlon did not specify a timeline for the local group’s bid announcement, he acknowledged the fans’ eagerness for a local ownership proposal. He stressed the importance of a swift response to alleviate concerns among Whitecaps supporters.
The Whitecaps have been on the market since 2024 due to challenges related to stadium control and revenue issues at B.C. Place, the team’s current home venue. Despite ongoing discussions with numerous parties over the past year, the club has yet to receive a viable offer to ensure its continued presence in Vancouver.
