Barcelona holds a special place in my heart, evoking memories of my Chinese parents despite their lack of connection to the city or Europe. During a visit with friends two years ago, the sight of a middle-aged couple at a local restaurant triggered thoughts of my parents, who lead a humble life in Windsor, Ontario.
The couple’s simple yet contented demeanor reminded me of my parents’ daily routine, with my father unwinding in front of the TV after a long day at work and my mother bustling about serving drinks in a casino. Despite their modest backgrounds, they have wholeheartedly supported me and my siblings through our educational journeys, ensuring we all attained university degrees.
While some of my peers have started rewarding their parents with trips after entering the workforce, my extended medical education has delayed such gestures. Nevertheless, I am determined to fulfill my promise of taking my parents on a well-deserved vacation once I complete my residency, despite concerns about their health.
The prospect of delayed gratification due to my ongoing medical training does not diminish my appreciation for my parents’ sacrifices. Through regular communication, hugs, and shared updates, I express my love and gratitude, reassuring them that they are always on my mind, whether I am pursuing my studies or exploring foreign lands.
