Actor Catherine O’Hara passed away due to a blood clot in her lung, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office. The report identified pulmonary embolism as the immediate cause of death, with underlying rectal cancer. O’Hara, aged 71, breathed her last on Jan. 30 at a Santa Monica hospital.
The oncologist overseeing her care mentioned treating O’Hara since March of the previous year and last seeing her on Jan. 27. Catherine O’Hara was renowned for her numerous memorable roles in television and film, such as in the sketch-comedy series “SCTV,” popular movies like “Beetlejuice” and “Home Alone,” and the acclaimed sitcom “Schitt’s Creek,” for which she earned an Emmy Award.
Her journey into show business began while she worked as a waitress at Toronto’s Second City Theatre, where she drew inspiration from watching performers on stage. She subsequently joined the touring company and later became a cast member of “SCTV,” collaborating with notable Canadian comedians like Eugene Levy, John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, and Martin Short.
