Blue Jays Fans Face Ticket Restrictions for ALDS in New York

Date:

Planning a visit to New York next week to witness the Blue Jays potentially securing a post-season series victory for the first time since 2016? Acquiring tickets may pose a challenge. Canadian residents are prohibited from purchasing tickets for the Blue Jays’ potential American League Division Series match at Yankee Stadium next week.

The Blue Jays, who clinched the AL East title, will bypass MLB’s wild-card round and progress straight to the AL Division Series. They are set to face the victors of the best-of-three wild-card series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, commencing on Tuesday.

The regular season concluded with both the Jays and their New York counterparts boasting identical records of 94 wins and 68 losses. Toronto secured the division title by virtue of holding the tiebreaker over the Yankees.

Come October 7, the ALDS will shift from Toronto to either the Bronx or Boston for Game 3. However, fans attempting to purchase tickets for Game 3 or a potential Game 4 in New York through Ticketmaster will encounter a restriction message specifying that sales are limited to residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.

Ticketmaster stipulates that residency will be determined based on the buyer’s credit card billing address. Purchases by fans outside of these four states will be voided without notice, with refunds issued.

To maintain ticket distribution among Canadian fans, the Blue Jays have adopted a similar approach. During the regular season and into the playoffs, the club is restricting Rogers Centre ticket sales to individuals with a Canadian billing address.

A spokesperson for the Yankees informed CBC News that the policy restricting sales to residents of only four states is intended to combat ticket scalping. This policy extends to the wild-card round, leading to discontent among Red Sox supporters.

In the event that the Red Sox prevail over the Yankees and advance to face the Blue Jays in subsequent rounds, Canadian-based Blue Jays supporters will not encounter the same purchasing restrictions.

A representative from the Red Sox stated via email that there are no purchase eligibility limitations at Fenway Park. This situation mirrors past instances where Canadian sports enthusiasts were barred from purchasing playoff tickets for U.S. games, as was the case in 2023 when Canadian residents were temporarily prohibited from buying tickets to the Toronto Maple Leafs’ playoff series in Florida.
