In a recent study, physicist Juha-Heikki Kantola was amazed by the problem-solving skills of bumblebees. The bees successfully maneuvered a ball to access a sugary reward without any prior training, showcasing their cognitive abilities. Published in the journal Science, the study demonstrates that insects, traditionally not associated with problem-solving, can exhibit spontaneous problem-solving skills similar to large-brained vertebrates.
Drawing inspiration from psychologist Wolfgang Köhler’s “box-and-banana problem,” the researchers designed experiments for the bumblebees. Rather than stacking boxes for a banana, the bees pushed a ball to reach a sugary reward. The study’s uniqueness lies in the bees’ naivety, as they had no prior exposure to such tasks, setting them apart from animals in previous insight problem-solving studies.
Additionally, a 2022 study revealed bees playing with wooden balls for enjoyment without a reward. To validate the bees’ problem-solving approach in the recent study, researchers incorporated a memory test. Bees were tasked with locating a hidden circle before maneuvering the ball, with 23 out of 30 bees successfully completing the task, proving their cognitive abilities.
Conservation biologist Amanda Liczner emphasized bumblebees’ problem-solving skills in nature, where they navigate complex tasks to gather nectar and find their way back to the nest. Liczner hopes this research will raise awareness of native bee populations, emphasizing the importance of protecting them by avoiding pesticides that can impair their cognitive functions.
Kantola believes the study challenges the notion of exclusive cognitive abilities in humans, highlighting the remarkable problem-solving skills of bees. This discovery sheds light on the intelligence and cognitive capacities of these tiny creatures, offering a heartwarming perspective on their abilities.
