Canada, though not a traditional superpower, was referred to as a “democratic superpower” by Chief Justice Richard Wagner during the opening ceremony of the Supreme Court’s judicial year. Wagner emphasized the importance of the country’s legal community in upholding the rule of law and judicial independence as essential defenses against tyranny and autocracy.
The event marked the 150th anniversary of the Supreme Court, a significant milestone in the court’s history. Justice Minister Sean Fraser, along with legal professionals and former court members, attended the ceremony where Wagner highlighted the enduring principles of the rule of law, an independent judiciary, and equal access to justice that have guided Canada’s legal system for a century and a half.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Supreme Court justices unveiled new ceremonial black robes with red accents, replacing the traditional scarlet robes with white fur trim. Wagner described the modern design of the robes as a symbol of openness and accessibility that reflects Canadian values.
Additionally, Wagner announced the establishment of a Supreme Court historical society to preserve and honor the court’s legacy through research, education, and public engagement. Fraser underlined the importance of defending democracy and the rule of law in the face of global challenges, urging all Canadians to take ownership of their democracy to safeguard fundamental rights for future generations.
Fraser warned against complacency and emphasized the need for active participation in upholding democratic values to prevent the erosion of rights over time. By ensuring the longevity of institutions like the Supreme Court, Canada can uphold its status as a strong and free nation for years to come.
