Canada has initiated its most recent census campaign to update its understanding of the nation and its inhabitants. The population census, which is a legal requirement, officially commenced on May 4th. Residents have been receiving invitation letters by mail with instructions on how to access and fill out the questionnaires.
André Loranger, the chief statistician of Canada, emphasized the importance of the census in tracking the country’s evolution over time. He urged all residents to complete their census questionnaire to provide valuable insights.
Michael Hann, the director of the Statistics Canada Research Data Centre at Western University, highlighted that the census aids Ottawa in gathering essential information for national planning and decision-making. This data influences crucial aspects such as healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and infrastructure development.
The census serves as a vital foundation for evidence-based policy-making, shaping the direction of the country. Conducted every five years, the previous census in 2021 coincided with the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to significant shifts in residential and occupational patterns across Canada.
In parallel to the population census, an agriculture census is also underway, targeting farm businesses nationwide. André Loranger underscored the significance of the agriculture census in providing a holistic overview of Canada’s agricultural sector, encompassing physical, economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The collected responses aim to equip Canadians with the necessary data to support farmers and facilitate long-term planning for the nation.
