Eurovision director Martin Green informed the BBC on Wednesday that Canada has the potential to participate in the renowned song competition, although no official request or decision has been put forth. Addressing speculations about Prime Minister Mark Carney’s interest in Canada joining Eurovision, Green acknowledged the rumors.
“We are aware of Mark Carney’s desire to engage with Europe,” Green stated. “While nothing specific has been brought to my attention, we maintain an inclusive stance. For 70 years, our doors have been open, welcoming anyone who aligns with the values of this remarkable event and wishes to grace our stage among friends.”
The Eurovision Song Contest, featuring countries presenting original songs, is overseen by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Historically, full participation in the annual singing extravaganza has been restricted to EBU full member broadcasters. However, in recent years, the contest has allowed a few non-European or associate-member participants, notably Australia, which initially competed in 2015 as a one-off and has since participated through special arrangements.
CBC/Radio-Canada holds associate membership in the EBU since 1950. In response to previous reports, Leon Mar, the broadcaster’s senior public affairs director, reiterated that associate membership does not grant eligibility to compete in Eurovision.
Mar affirmed that CBC/Radio-Canada is actively engaging with the EBU and maintaining a presence at the contest. Emphasizing the broadcaster’s editorial independence as a federal Crown corporation operating independently from the government, Mar highlighted that their independence is safeguarded by the Broadcasting Act.
The notion of Canada entering Eurovision surfaced briefly in last year’s federal budget, indicating collaboration between the government and CBC/Radio-Canada to explore potential participation. Government sources revealed Carney’s personal involvement in advancing the initiative. Regarding Australia’s unique status, Mar suggested direct contact with the EBU for further information.
CBC/Radio-Canada has neither pursued a setup akin to Australia’s nor been approached to do so. Green’s statements suggest the possibility of Canada’s future engagement in Eurovision, contingent upon EBU approval and likely necessitating a formal proposal. No official application or timeline has been disclosed.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 progresses with the second round of semi-finals on Thursday, leading up to the grand finale on Saturday.
