“Canadian Border Outage Raises Security Concerns”

Date:

A recent IT outage at Canadian border checkpoints led to concerns about missed security alerts for incoming individuals. The outage, caused by an unexpected technical glitch during routine maintenance on Sept. 28, disrupted operations at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Border officers reported that security lookouts were overlooked during the outage, resulting in delays of up to 38 hours for cross-border truck drivers. These lookouts are vital warnings about potential threats posed by individuals or shipments entering the country.

Kelly Sundberg, a former CBSA officer and current border security researcher at Mount Royal University, expressed worry that unauthorized individuals might have entered the country during the system downtime. He emphasized the importance of these security alerts in identifying potential national security risks that require further scrutiny.

The CBSA defended its response to the outage, stating that safety and security protocols were maintained through manual verification of travelers’ identities and declarations. However, the agency did not confirm whether border officers had access to security lookouts during the disruption.

Mark Weber, president of the Customs and Immigration Union representing border officers, raised concerns about the delayed access to security information, as officers had to address the backlog once the system was restored.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) reported significant delays for truck drivers at the New York-Ontario land crossings, impacting supply chain productivity and potentially leading to factory shutdowns.

Despite ongoing efforts by the CBSA to enhance IT systems with a substantial budget, border security expert Christian Leuprecht highlighted systemic challenges that require more than just financial investments. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of outdated systems to ensure effective national security measures in the 21st century.
