“Canadian Bourbon Surges Amid ‘Buy Canadian’ Movement”

Date:

Many Canadians have missed the unique taste of Kentucky bourbon due to the impact of trade tensions initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump. This led to a surge in the “Buy Canadian” movement, prompting consumers to opt for Canadian alternatives over American products, including bourbon.

Ottawa-based whisky expert Davin de Kergommeaux expressed his support for boycotting American products while acknowledging the significance of bourbon in the Canadian market. Brands like Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark faced challenges as provinces began removing American booze from shelves.

The surge in bourbon’s popularity in Canada over the past decade was abruptly halted by the tariff disputes and political rhetoric. However, Craig Peters, founder of Maverick Distillery in Oakville, Ont., highlighted the unique characteristics of bourbon, such as being aged in new oak barrels and containing at least 51% corn mash.

The impact of the trade tensions caused a significant decline in bourbon exports to Canada, prompting pleas from bourbon producers to resume stocking U.S. products. Despite the challenges faced by the industry globally, this situation created an opportunity for Canadian distilleries to thrive.

Maverick Distillery adapted to the changing market demands by bottling Kentucky bourbon in Canada, adhering to regulations that restrict the use of geographic names for alcohol produced in foreign countries. Other distillers in Canada have also introduced bourbon-style whisky variations to cater to consumer preferences.

De Kergommeaux emphasized the positive outlook for Canadian whisky producers, noting the increasing demand and appreciation for local products. The shift towards Canadian whiskies amidst the global decline in alcohol sales reflects a growing preference for domestic alternatives.
