“Canadian Short Track Speed Skaters Shine at ISU World Tour Opener”

Canada’s short track speed skaters put on an impressive show at the ISU World Tour season opener in Montreal, clinching two gold and bronze medals. Local favorite William Dandjinou thrilled spectators by winning the men’s 500m event, while Courtney Sarault from Moncton, N.B., claimed victory in the women’s 1,000m race.

Dandjinou, a towering 24-year-old talent, dominated the men’s 500m race, crossing the finish line in 40.350 seconds at Maurice Richard Arena. He outpaced Italy’s Pietro Sighel, who finished closely behind in 40.414. Three-time Olympic medalist Steven Dubois secured the bronze with a time of 40.480, moving up from the fifth starting position.

Sarault showcased her skill by winning the women’s 1,000m race with a time of 1:28.185, edging out competitors from South Korea and the United States. She expressed her excitement about the strong start to the season, emphasizing the boost it provides to her confidence and the team’s morale.

Additionally, Sarault contributed to Canada’s medal haul by helping the team secure bronze in the women’s 3,000m relay alongside Danaé Blais, Kim Boutin, and Florence Brunelle. The quartet finished with a time of 4:07.45, earning a spot on the podium.

The competition in Montreal will continue on Sunday, with coverage available on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem. This World Tour season will play a crucial role in determining Olympic entries and participants in the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Games in February.
